Not Only Environmental Conditions but Also Human Awareness Matters: A Successful Post-Crayfish Plague Reintroduction of the White-Clawed Crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes) in Northern Italy

چکیده

In Europe, invasive freshwater crayfish are not only changing ecosystems, but they also leading to local extinctions of native crayfish. This is particularly evident for the populations red swamp and spiny-cheek in northern Italy, which threatening last isolated white-clawed Here, we describe steps that accompanied a successful reintroduction an Italian stream (Park Monte Barro) that, although from other sites, suffered illegal introduction 2013. After removal presumably all introduced individuals, started periodical surveys (twice year) confirm absence further introductions monitor environmental conditions. Prior autumn 2018, developed intense dissemination activity raise awareness features importance among landowners surrounding stream, including those suspected crayfish: organized public meetings performed seven direct visits, house house, people providing information on good practices conservation. From 2018 2020, every autumn, reintroduced batch 3-month-old juveniles, program monitoring growth density, water quality, landowners’ disturbance site. We detected significant increase total length (TL) first (October 2018) June 2020. were consistently larger than 2019 surveys; some them able breed less 2 years after reintroduction. estimated density large reached 0.57 individuals/m , lower observed prior extinction. did detect any case human Our results underline actions could be more effective when stakeholders having greatest potential impact species identified, informed, involved as primary caretakers activities.

Resistance to the crayfish plague, Aphanomyces astaci (Oomycota) in the endangered freshwater crayfish species, Austropotamobius pallipes

The pathogen Aphanomyces astaci Schikora 1906 is responsible for the decline of the native crayfish species of Europe, and their current endangered status. This pathogenic species is native to North America and only colonizes aquatic decapods. The North American crayfish species have a high resistance to this pathogen, while species from other regions are highly susceptible. However, recent fie...

The British freshwater crayfish Austropotamobius pallipes

lives in streams or pools that are liable to dry up or become stagnant, and these animals are known to leave water voluntarily to forage or to invade neighbouring habitats (Huxley, 1896; Taylor and Wheatly, 1980). When placed in air, the gills collapse and the crayfish suffer continuously from systemic hypoxia and hypercapnia. Associated with an initial virtual anoxia and a switch to anaerobic ...

The long-term effects and detection ranges of passive integrated transponders in white-clawed crayfish Austropotamobius pallipes

This is an Open distribution, Abstract – Individual identification of the endangered white-clawed crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes) can provide valuable information when assessing long-term survival of animals released into the wild; currently the most effective method is the use of passive integrated transponders (PIT) tags. A 360 days ex situ experiment was undertaken on 20-month, captive-...

A bomb set to drop: parthenogenetic Marmorkrebs for sale in Ireland, a European location without non-indigenous crayfish

Ireland is one of the few locations in Europe where non-indigenous North American crayfish species have not been introduced, and is a refuge for endangered white-clawed crayfish, Austropotamobius pallipes (Lereboullet, 1858). The parthenogenetic crayfish species Marmorkrebs, Procambarus fallax f. virginalis (Hagen, 1870), is sold in the pet trade in Ireland within the recorded range of A. palli...

The electrical potential difference across the epithelium of isolated gills of the crayfish Austropotamobius pallipes (Lereboullet).

There has been a considerable amount of work on the electrical potential differences and active transport processes of ions across various vertebrate epithelia (Ussing, i960). Little work of this type has been attempted on invertebrate material. As the crustacean gill epithelium has only a single layer of cells separating the body fluid and the external medium, it should be particularly suitabl...
